Re: Step-Son having surgery

I have two threads going (sorry) and it seems there are people following both of them. So going to put the latest update here also.

September 21, Monday

Simon had 4 month post-surgery check up with his neurologist, Dr. Von Allmen, today. They are going to schedule another 23 hour video EEG in the EMU. They will monitor him and see how many seizures he's actually having and how severe they are. Simon had to give blood so they could check his levels--he didn't like that AT ALL! He is still traumatized from all the IV's that went bad in May!

Dr. V. increased his Keppra dose and turned up his VNS for now. After the EEG, she'll look at adjusting his meds further. Hopefully that will take care of the seizures! (He's still having those short 5 second ones every day).

We check in with Dr. Baumgartner on Thursday for HIS 4 month follow-up. Simon is still going to PT, OT, and Speech Therapy weekly. He has a really positive attitude about school (thank God for that!) but it is still pretty difficult for him. Please keep praying for our little guy!

Re: Step-Son having surgery

From last Thursday 9-24

Visited Dr. Baumgartner today for the 4 month visit. Was pretty uneventful, and that's a good thing. He said we will wait to see what the 23 hour EEG shows, and wait to see what medicine therapy changes Dr. Von Allmen makes. He was happy Simon's speech has improved since our last visit and that Simon has a good attitude about school. He wasn't surprised Simon's seizures returned, given how difficult his Epilepsy has been to treat. But he is not ready to say that's the best Simon will ever be. He is a great doctor. We are so lucky God led us to Dr. Von Allmen and to him!

The 23-hour EEG has been scheduled for Saturday, October 10th. That is Simon's birthday--he's turning 9. He is actually very OK with spending his birdhday in the EMU. He's an amazing little guy!

We stopped by the EMU this morning just to visit and say hi. Sara was working, and she was so excited to see Simon. She said she's going to try and make sure she's working that weekend. Simon was happy about that! They are all amazing people that work in that place. All of them! There's a special place in Heaven for people who help children!

Re: Step-Son having surgery

Prayers for Simon and all your family. I'm glad he's got good folks to care for him. As a father, I know you wish you could take every needle for him...all we can do is love them!
