Step-Son having surgery

Ok so he isn't out of surgery yet, they are closing him up and will prob be out in about 30 mins and headed for a MRI. But here is the deal. They did the re section (taking out the bad part of the left frontal lobe). They also hooked him back up to an EEG after that and while he was still open. NO SPIKES ON THE EEG, which means NO SEIZURES!!!!! So this is freaking awesome news. He may have a few days of being weaking on the right side of his body after the surgery but he will get over that 100% and will not have any lasting effects of the surgery, also freaking awesome news!! Thanks everybody for your thoughts and prayers!!!!

Seriously Frank, If all continues to go well I think this call's for a Puff Herf celebration. I'm only about four hours from Houston and I am willing to drive if we set it up to were I can plan for it!!!!!!!!!!

So the news didn't stay great for long, and I didn't want to update untill I knew more. So the same night of his surgery in the ICU he started having seizures. They where real short and we didn't know what to think of it. The Doc called and said it could be many reasons, that it could be just from having brain surgery, it could be false (the brain just doing what it has now been trained to do) or of course seizures. To give it some time. The next day they hooked him back up to the EEG and both doctors came in today. So here is the update.

Well, with the external electrodes in place since yesterday afternoon, they have captured several seizures on the EEG. All are still coming from the left side. Dr. Von Allmen and Dr. Baumgartner both came to review the EEG and have come up with a plan.

With the aid of a Stealth MRI Neuro Spine Center of Wisconsin - News "Stealth Station" Imaging Tool Helps University Of Maryland Surgeons Treat Tumors Deep Within The Brain , Simon will be back in the OR (Wed or Thurs, not sure yet) and they will remove just a little bit more. On Friday, they had removed all that they knew was bad, and just a tiny bit more. This time, the area they could possibly resect without causing permanent damage is smaller, so they will be using the Stealth to tell them exactly how far back they can go. There is some activity showing up on the right side, but Dr. V. could see that that activity originates on the left. So we need to get the rest of the bad left side out. Dr. B. says the sooner they go back in, the easier it is for both him and for Simon. It sounds crazy to have 3 brain surgeries in less than 2 weeks, but he said he has had worse cases than that before.

Both doctors are as disappointed as we ALL are. Poor Dr. B. just shook his head at first, he really felt they had gotten all of the bad brain. They had both been so happy after surgery. But neither one has given up, and there is still hope. I don't want anyone giving up right now! Simon is tough, and we all need to be tough, too! He hasn't come this far for everything to just be hopeless now!

OK, so his next surgery is set for this Thursday 5/28. He is doing good today and we are all just ready to get this over with!
