On her follow-up appointment the doctor told her that she has stage 2 grade 3 invasive ductal breast cancer. As soon as she heals from the surgery they want to start chemotherapy. I am not a doctor, but know of someone who went through the same thing...this was about 12 years ago. From what I understand in this person's case, she is also "ER positive". Subsequent to completing chemo therapy, she did not take the estrogen-blocking medication. The cancer later metasticized. She now is taking the medication. Estrogen is like miracle-grow (for lack of a better analogy) for this kind of cancer. From what I understand, medications such as Arimadex and Tamaxafin (sp?) can block the estrogen from attaching to the cancer cells, thereby cutting off much of the food supply. I believe that there are a number of these estrogen-blocking medications available, and sometimes the doctors will try different medications until they find the one that best keeps the cancer in check.

This person also receives periodic luprin (sp?) shots, as these put the patient into menopause (blocking estrogen production), and extra calcium intake was advised by the Doctor. Regular blood tests are taken to determine the continued effectiveness fo the medications...I think they monitor what are called 2729 markers.

Bottom line, there are treatments available that possibly could be very effective to fight this disease.

Again, I am not a doctor or trained in medicine, but I Hope this helps.

2.5 years ago my boss was told he had stage 4, less than six months to live and to start saying his good-byes. Only in his 40s with a beautiful wife and two daughters - I felt physically sick thinking about what he would leave behind and how they would go on without him.

2.5 years later, he is still fighting it, but the doctors tell him they can't find a single cancer cell in his body and his life has hardly skipped a beat.
