I think David @Piper covered it pretty well, it depends on how bad they are as to how radical you need to get, I would probably start with hot water and go from there. The water does dull a waxed finish but Iíve found that a quick rubdown with a pipe polishing cloth with bring back the glow, I havenít noticed any effect on a varnish or lacquer finish.

Remove the stem and clean the shank.. it collects ALOT of funk..

I use alcohol and a bristled pipe cleaner. I also have a 30 caliber brass rifle bore a cleaner I use on REALLY crusty estates..
