Would You Smoke A Cigar With Mold On It?

The title says it all.

But would you smoke a cigar with mold on it?

For me, if it was on the cigar but not the foot or cap and depending in the extent, yup, I have brushed and smoked.

Would like to know your take?

Yeah, I wipe it off and go, if itís on the foot Iíll cut it back a half inch or so and see what it looks like. I have thrown moldy cigars out if there really bad on the foot.

Seems a consensus is forming on wipe and smoke, as long as its not around the foot or cap. I tend to agree.

Love the "Cuban penicillin" term.

LOL - Yes we've been "forming" that consensus around here for a while now; at least a decade or more.

Cap doesn't matter though. The cap is, in fact, the most common place for mold to start; presumably due to more contact from the roller's hands and having been wetted more than other parts of the wrapper with the water-based cellulose glue used to affix the cap.

I smoke in moderation. Only one cigar at a time. - Mark Twain

I do know some BOTL can be very polarized about mold. But I look as it this way. Mold spores are all around, even if you can't see them. And some mold we can see we eat. Cheese is an example. So unless the stick is covered in green mold, I'll wipe and smoke. I should stress if it's white mold only. Green in my case does not mean go, but toss.

I don't ever recall having a cigar with mold on it but if I did and it was a light dusting of mold I'd wipe it off and smoke it.

I've been doing some serious experimenting with fermenting vegetables and hot peppers the last month or so. Once the homework is done and the experiments with fermenting has started it's a truly eye opening experience when you realize how much is floating in the air around us. Spores, mold, fungus, bacteria, etc.... All you need is the right or wrong environment for any one of them to flourish.
