More great advice, thank you guys. Now I'm thinking I should take the coin to a shop, somewhere where we could get to know the folks who run it. And then get the coin graded through them. If the coin turns out not to be worth that much, there still is the coolness factor of the experience. I like the idea of building a relationship with a coin shop where I can go to and talk to the guys.

Maybe a coin show would be fun too.

It's a cool hobby. I've been collecting all the state and state park quarters. But my kid is getting deep into it. Paper money is something he's just starting to get into.

"Dad, can I get a 500 dollar bill."

"No, I'm not giving you 500 dollars."

"They don't make them anymore so I think they go for over a thousand."

"Then, that's an even bigger no."

My dad used to belong to a coin club. Every month he'd get a box of graded and ungraded coins and paper money. You pick the ones you want and send the rest back. Also he loves coin shows. Apparently that's where the deals are. He still talks about the deal on the gold coins him and my pap bought 25 years ago.

Folks, please do your research before joining Littleton. It sounds as good to a numismatic noob as Thompson does to a cigar noob.

I do hope its not a Morgan Dollar, now that is a rats nest and something i keep well away from, ask 20 people and you will get 20 completely different opinions even the already graded ones (been there, got the t-shirt)

Just got home and didn't have a chance to update. He went into a bit of detail before I left. He said it was great in the beginning but became a giant PITA. He said he was sending back way more than he kept. Then he finally canceled it.

But he said if you can't get to shows it was a great way to expand your collection.. but his heyday of collecting was pre internet and they had maybe one show a year around here.

He also said the kid may wanna get a subscription to the numismatic(I think) . Guess it's like a newspaper for coin guys.

Definitely! My Dad got hooked up with Littleton at one point and IMO the coins were over graded and over-priced. YMMV!

I normally just go to the Bay and buy a graded one, unless I have a rare one and think that it will be worth it after grading.

I saw that there was the numismatic news and the numismatist magazine.

I'll post some pics of the coins in a bit if any of you guys want to take a look for some feedback. It's some kind of Greek or Roman coin, I don't know if that changes anything. He was saying he's only seen it once online, couldn't really get much info on it.
