Peterson Sherlock Holmes Original

Hello, everyone! I recently bought an old Peterson's Sherlock Holmes "Original" estate pipe, and I'm wondering if these were pre-smoked at the factory. The reason I ask is that the inside of the bowl is lightly blackened, except for the bottom of the bowl where it is new, untouched wood. I just can't imagine how this pipe could've been smoked without any tobacco or juices touching the bottom 1/8th of the bowl. (I tried to take a photo of it, but the lighting was a little difficult.) Anyway, I'm eager to smoke my first bowl in it tonight. Maybe Pipeworks & Wilke Rumcake. =)

Thanx,
Christopher

Peterson precarbonizes(sp?) the bowls so that is most likely it is. so make sure you break it in with a few half bowls first. nice pipe and enjoy

In my opinion, it's likely been smoked before. Some guys are talented enough refurbishers to pass off a lightly used estate as "unsmoked". It may have just been smoked only once or twice. If it was packed full, but never smoked all the way down it could easily look like that after a cleaning and refurb.

Any man who checks his watch while smoking his pipe is doing it wrong.

Nice pipe indeed. I'd love to own one of them.

my gut as well. it's easy to get everything polished on a wheel but the inside of the bowl should be clean and smooth (at least that is how my petes come brand new in the box).

Oh, the polish and shine, I did. The pipe came from a woman who was selling her late husband's pipe collection. The band was terribly tarnished, but otherwise a quick spit shine on the wood and a little Halcyon did the trick.

Thanx for the info, everyone!

Christopher =)

Nice looking pete. It doesn't look like it was smoked much.

That's a beauty! Congratulations!!

Re: Peterson Sherlock Holmes Original

I would say it's never been smoked. Because if it has in fact been smoked enough to build up actual cake on the walls (which takes quite a few bowls to get going), then the bottom wouldn't remain new looking. IE: the amount you would need to smoke to build up cake on the walls would also be enough to discolour the bottom.

It's probably just pre-carboned. Although I do like your word 'carbonizing' as it reminds me of some the Empire would do to their pipes as the did to Solo.

But I just bought one of those Ukrainian eBay pipes and it came with the inside walls lined with a nice hard carbon coating.
