Can anyone tell me more about these Meerschaum pipes

I would be delighted if anyone could tell me something about these two pipes. I inherited them from a relative who was a collector of sorts.

They look very good, and well done. Are there any markings on the bottom of the pipe or on the stem?

No, I can see no markings on the pipes or stems. Someone has written in ink the #34 (middle eastern one) and #19 (US) between the pipe and stem.

Re: Can anyone tell me more about these Meerschaum pipes

The first one looks like one of two things to me, either a carving of an old army general, or an old wild west figure. I can't quite pinpoint which or exactly who, but that's what it reminds me of. I have tried looking for some images of legendary figures (both army and wild west), but didn't find who I was looking for or one that looked exactly the same.

The second one looks like what I believe most people would refer to as a "sultan" pipe.
The best I can gather, a "sultan" meerschaum pipe is one which is a bust of a leader-type figure, as in a country's leader.

In addition, if you would just like additional information about Meerschaum pipes, please check out the following thread, and look at the original posts by Blaylock. It contains lots of wonderful information!

Can't tell much from the photos. There might be a name on the case if you have them.
Most Meerschaums don't have any markings on them, even the good ones. That's just the way it is.

Re: Can anyone tell me more about these Meerschaum pipes

Thank you very much everyone for your guidance. Following your leads, I am wondering whether the 'Sultan' pipe may be Bacchus Dionyous as I now notice that a side view shows what looks like grapes which seem to be a feature of other Bacchus pipes.

Re the other, again following on from your guidance, I am wondering whether it could be Buffalo Bill. I notice there is quite a bit of discussion on the web about Meerschaum Buffalo Bill pipes and I have let myself be convinced that there is some resemblance, especially the long flowing hair.

I forgot to mention their size. From the base of the front to the tops of their hats is 2.75 inches.

Again, many thanks.
