Re: Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Review

Strange. I would describe the 1990 I had as lack-luster at best. I found it bland and one-dimensional.

Perhaps I had a dud...? Perhaps I'm crazy.

Let's have a spelling contest.

I will say that since most of the flavor development was in the first third, the middle and back stretches might have seemed a bit one-dimensional. But it was, to me, a multilayered dimension.

And there is no doubt that you're crazy, but that probably has nothing to do with how you taste cigars.

Dow's porto is usually our go-to. It runs in the $12 range depending on where you are. Warre's is another good one. FWIW, if you want the "real" thing, stick with "porto" which is actually from Portugal, the country of port's origination. As I understand it, the same thing from any other country has to call itself "port" by comparison (in the same sense that they can't call a single malt whisky "scotch" unless it is from Scotland). At least that's the short answer. Incidentally, it probably matters less whether you get "port" or "porto" and more that it is good. Just don't expect a whole lot at the sub $10 price range (though I read somewhere that Jonesy Old Tawny Port is supposed to be good and that's right around $10 if you can find it). Like most things, the further down you go, the shoddier it gets, though I have found that a good cigar will make a moderate libation much better!

Very nice review and pics, I've always enjoyed this smoke. Thanks Mike.

Any fish in the pond? Koi?

Yes - we have several koi in the 12-16 inch range. Kind of hard to see right now as the water lettuce completely covers the water's surface. It shouldn't be growing very aggressively this late in the year, but ridiculously unseasonably warm temperatures have kept it going. I'm planning yet another attack with the skim net before the weekend.

These pics are over two years old - I'll have to get some more current ones!

That pond looks like a miniature golf course.

LOL! It'll look more like a water trap when the excessive growth is removed from the surface!
