I really liked the way the bent stem would balance in my mouth. I could leave it in my mouth while puffing. There pretty cheap you could pick up one of each before getting an expensive pipe to see what you like better.

True, although I'm not a fan of the look of most Briar pipes. I do like a rich Meerschaum Pipe though. Maybe when I get into the hobby more I 'll invest in a good Meerschaum for home smoking. The corncob will make a good travel pipe, since its so cheap and can be smoked with limited cool down periods. Also can effectively be used with multiple tobacco's without flavor transfers.

Briar is a type of smoking Pipe, made from Briar wood. Most people swear by it, however it's not my cup of tea. The briar over heats and you have to let it cool down. Experts say it should only be smoked once in a 48 hour period. You also can't smoke multiple tobacco's on the same Briar, due to the cake that forms inside the bowl. They make Briar with a Meerschaum lining which can handle the aforementioned shortcomings. I prefer a corncob because its cheap, can be smoked multiple times in a day and can handle more than one flavor of tobacco.
