Long Draws or Short Puffs ?

A few weeks into the pipe enjoyment I have a question for the old crusty pipe smokers...

I have gotten comfortable with the packing and lighting and keeping lit a bowl of tobacco, averaging about 20-30 minutes without a relight, and keeping the bowl decently cool, as the title states though I have found that if I go with long draws on the pipe I tend to have more of an issue keeping it lit, as compared to shorter 3-5 puffs.

I haven't had any issue with the bowl getting too hot or getting a burnt taste of any type doing the shorter puffs, I am enjoying and getting good flavor.

Question is I have is this just like in cigars as experience builds technique will fine tune and develop, or is it more of a personal preference style and if it works and is enjoyable then I should not worry.

Kinda looking to see what other do as well.

Take sips. Small short hits. Trying to hit it like a hookah reaps terrible results.

Win or lose, we booze.

Never tried a hookah personally but yes short puffs or small sips is what is working best for me, usually 3-5 of them every so often as not to heat the bowl up too much.

Also curious as with larger amounts of tobacco I have found that dumping some of the ash off the top helps me as well.

I love it when a thread teaches me something without having to ask.

I go 2 quick puffs 1 long draw. Can't break some cigar habits but it works for me.

Short shallow sips, I try to keep the tobacco right on the verge of going out.

Most of the time I don't, if it's a deep bowl I might, if I set one down for a bit I will dump the ash before relighting.
