When to Ash Your Pipe

I know this was a big question for me starting out. After trial and error, and much research:

Most of the time, I gently tamp the ash, and won't dump it until after halfway through the bowl, and then at that point, the bowl is pretty much close to being done.

I've ashed earlier, if I'm getting an ashy taste.

If I see the bowl tunneling, I might gently pull the tobacco from the side of the pipe and do a light stir of the top ash.....

What say you guys? Any techniques, concepts, things to add about ashing your pipe?

I will tamp it down as I go, I might dump ash if Iím having a problem with it staying lit or a hard time with a relight. If I set a bowl down for a bit and then decide I want to finish it later I will dump all the ash and fluff it up a bit.

If I see a stick that made a noob nic sick,I put it on my list as a must try. (UBC03)

If the ash starts spilling out because I'm bending over the sink or some other porcelain appliance, I dump it out. If that tobacco gets disturbed because I've shaken the pipe to clear out some moisture (when I don't have a pipe cleaner), I'll dump out the ash. Like you and Nathan, I'll dump out the ash if I've let the pipe go cold, have trouble relighting or have more that about 50% ash in the bowl.

I dump the ash when it is an ash hole.....usually I end up blowing ash all over the place when using the "breathing" method......

Haha. You should start a thread where we can post pics of the shirts and sweaters we've ruined!

And thanks for posting the question. Never thought of the ash aspect.

No prob. I figure the ash is gonna effect the taste and affect the quality of the burn. (I think I used affect and effect correctly there)

Affect is a verb, effect a noun.

I usually just smoke till I get no smoke. Then I poke the ash with my finger and it collapses. Sometimes the bowl is done but usually there is about 1/3 left. Then I puff hard a bit. It usually starts back up. Otherwise I dump ash and relight.

RAVEN: Remember Affect a Verb Effect a Noun lol.

I like your description of the process because it simplifies ashing and tamping. I realize having been smoking pipes for a while now, how daunting all these steps can be to a new pipe smoker.
